Transforming Young Lives in Barrhead High School

“One of my teachers said I wouldn’t get any qualifications – and now I’ve got six because of this programme.”
– SSF Participant

This year a dedicated group of S1-S3 pupils at Barrhead High School took part in a bespoke SSF Education & Training programme.

The young people joined the programme because they were finding it hard to engage in class and keep motivated in school. And the results have been incredible.

The group has demonstrated exceptional growth – developing transferable life skills, confidence, and successfully achieving accredited qualifications – all through sport and youth work activities.

Delivered in weekly 1.5-hour sessions, the programme blended physical activity with discussion-based learning, creating a supportive environment for meaningful connection and development.

The nature of the programme developed along the way to suit the needs of the group; while the students engaged enthusiastically with movement-based tasks, challenges emerged in classroom-based work – particularly around focus, emotional regulation, and peer dynamics. So the programme was adapted accordingly.

A core feature of the Education & Training programme is the opportunity to work towards SCQF-accredited qualifications. Collectively, the group achieved an impressive total of 54 qualifications – a reflection of their commitment, personal growth, and increasing confidence.

The group also engaged in meaningful conversations about their aspirations, sharing a diverse range of career interests. These discussions helped link the skills they were building – such as communication, leadership, emotional awareness, and teamwork – to real-world opportunities and future pathways.

As a result of the programme, the young people reported better relationships with their peers, increased self-esteem and clear personal development. Leadership qualities emerged in unexpected individuals, and as the programme progressed, many young people began taking greater ownership of their learning – moving from close guidance to demonstrating independence, responsibility, and initiative across both practical and reflective tasks. These positive shifts extended beyond the programme, with staff reporting increased school engagement and improved attainment among several participants.

“Some of these young people were only coming into the school for the session with SSF – it was great to see.”

Some sessions brought additional challenges, including conflict and emotional dysregulation, particularly during classroom discussions. Our staff recognised these behavioural expressions of unmet needs, and responded with one-to-one support, relational approaches, and flexible delivery as needed. The team used open conversations and active, movement-based games to re-energise the group, rebuild connection and create opportunities for leadership to flourish.

The most impactful sessions balanced activity and discussion, underscoring the value of a trauma-informed approach that prioritises voice, choice, and connection. Participants made significant progress – not only in their qualifications, but in their confidence, relationships, and readiness for future opportunities.

We’re excited to continue working with Barrhead High School in the upcoming academic year.
