SSF delivered a 22-week Education & Training programme in St. Ninian’s High School, Kirkintilloch, for 11 S4-S5 pupils who faced challenges engaging with traditional classroom learning.
Recognising that mainstream education does not always meet the needs of every young person, this programme provided an alternative route for learning through sport and physical activity, offering opportunities for success in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Each week, the group worked with tutors throughout a double period to complete six SCQF-accredited qualifications and five SSF Wellbeing Workshops. For some, getting involved came naturally, while others needed time, encouragement, and a safe space to build trust before they felt ready to participate. For the young people who found it difficult to engage at the start, we adapted activities to meet their needs and as relationships developed, many began to grow in confidence and feel a sense of belonging.
Despite initial challenges, the programme was a huge success, with the group of young people achieving 43 SCQF qualifications and completing 34 SSF Wellbeing Workshops.
Many participants were preparing to pursue school, college, apprenticeships, or employment, and the transferable life skills and qualifications they gained through the programme supported their personal development and improved their confidence in taking the next steps toward positive destinations. The programme provided a positive and meaningful experience, where young people felt valued and supported.
The impact extended beyond qualifications. One participant, who initially found change overwhelming, positively developed throughout the programme, building resilience and developing a more positive outlook towards school. Staff observed a transformation in his engagement, confidence, and motivation, reinforcing how consistent, supportive relationships can help young people feel seen and understood.
The positive feedback from both staff and participants highlights the importance of creating learning environments where young people feel safe, respected, and empowered. The school has expressed a strong interest in having the programme return next academic year, recognising the positive impact it has had on the young people involved.
