Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week 2021 celebrates the successes of every young woman across Scotland! We wanted to shine the spotlight on our very own Simone Sherrie who has been inspired from the work of SSF in allowing opportunities for disadvantaged young people and families to change their lives through sport.
Simone has chosen to represent SSF by participating in the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday 29th May 2022!
“I am challenging myself to run my first full marathon. SSF encourages young people to be role models to their peers, they are inspiring me to keep challenging myself and to not forget the impact that sport can have on mental health.”

Simone enjoyed running from a young age from taking part in cross country, to running with her dog, to asking her papa to time how long running around the house would take. From there her passion for running grew and Simone represented the North Ayrshire Athletics club competing in races from 800m to 10,000m events. For Simone it was not about winning but having the opportunity to gain experience with the support of her dad!
The inspiration for fundraising for charities came from participating in a 5K at school where Simone raised money for another charity close to her heart, it was then that she realised the positive impact running had. Since, Simone has participated in many organised running events including; Sport Relief 5K 2015, Cancer Research UK 10K 2018, The Great Scottish Run 10K 2019 and Edinburgh Half Marathon 2019. Now Simone’s next challenge is progressing on to a full marathon!
Simone volunteered with SSF as a Finance Assistant before joining our sessional staff team in January 2021. Through her work over the course of the pandemic Simone has witnessed first-hand the overwhelming challenges which vulnerable families and young people face everyday. Simone has played a key part in the behind-the-scene finance procedures which has not only helped her build her experience, it has helped massively across the organisation too.
“SSF helped me during a challenging time of my own and I wanted to give back for helping me regain confidence and a chance to learn new skills. Volunteering with SSF has been the best decision I have made, and I am delighted to be part of the team!”

Simone has been working with us for over a year now and she has developed both professionally and personally. Her confidence has grown and she continues to be a great asset to the team! Thank you and good luck for the run Simone!
