This year, Sported invited SSF to return and deliver our Education and Training to a second group of Young Influencers – this time based in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. The programme is designed to empower young people with disabilities as they take their first steps into the world of coaching, leadership, and community engagement.
This cohort included six individuals aged 14-35, all with a range of disabilities. Some were already volunteering within their local community sports clubs, while others were exploring this for the first time. Over the course of six weeks, the group completed SCQF accredited qualifications in Communication and Goal Setting, as well as a bespoke workshop focused on Leadership and Influencing Change in their Communities.
The content was delivered through activity-based learning, designed to make the sessions engaging, inclusive, and relevant to each individual.
Our modules are flexible by design – allowing us to tailor the learning experience to suit the needs, abilities, and interests of the group. Practical games, group discussions, and reflective tasks were carefully selected and adapted to ensure that every participant could access the learning in a way that worked for them. We recognised the varied needs within the group and ensured that each session was staffed appropriately, with SSF tutors supported by a minimum of three staff members from Sported, South Lanarkshire Disability Sport, and Cho’s Tae Kwon Do.
Over the six weeks each participant made meaningful progress in their own way, whether it was developing new skills, gaining confidence or forming positive relationships. The programme delivered valuable personal and practical outcomes resulting in individuals being better equipped to take their next steps in coaching, leadership and community involvement.
“There was a lot to commend about the program, especially the very efficient use of quite short periods of time and I will be keen to use this programme again in the future and am especially grateful to the SSF team for turning an idea into a very successful reality. The impact of this programme cannot be underestimated, the adaptable and person centre approach used by tutors has given participants the opportunity to excel!” – Sported and Scottish Disability Sport Course Organisers
“I feel as though I have learnt that sometimes you need to approach tasks in a different way that helps others. I felt Scott was enthusiastic and encouraged everyone to join in but also made individuals feel involved even when they didn’t want to join the games. I would be happy if I can help others like Scott helped us.” – Participant
“Scott had a great communication style and was able to make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the sessions. He found a good balance between fun interactive games and coursework. I feel that James has benefitted from the course as he has started to look at other people’s challenges and how he could help them.” – Participant Parent.
