A fundraising success story
In January 2024, Sport Management & Enterprise students from the University of the West of Scotland were tasked with raising money for Scottish Sports Futures (SSF) through the Tenner to Tons entrepreneurial challenge. Each group of students were given a starting capital of £10. Over the course of the module, the aim was to transform the initial £10 into as much money as possible through entrepreneurship.
To launch the challenge, Preeti Jassal (Marketing & Fundraising Manager at SSF), provided an overview of SSF and the important work carried out by the organisation, and introduced students to the Tenner to Tons challenge.
Students developed a range of ideas from bake sales to football cards to walks and to fun sports days. Throughout the challenge, students were applying theoretical concepts learnt from the module into practice.
At the end of the challenge, groups provided short presentations, reflecting on what went well and what they have learnt. They also shared how much money they had raised from the initial £10. The groups were marked based on: presentation, innovation, and money raised. Well done to Group 3 who raised £288.70 from their fun sports day and cake sale and were duly presented with SSF warm hats and tote bags.
As a result of the Tenner to Tons challenge, UWS Sport Management & Enterprise students raised a total of £1822.22.
"Having the students engage with our annual Tenner to Tons entrepreneurial challenge was a great success! It was such a pleasure to interact with the students and hear their initial thoughts on what they could do as a team. After they had completed their challenges, I had the privilege of coming back into the university to hear the presentations from all the teams, this really highlighted their understanding of entrepreneurship. The enthusiasm and creativity shown by the teams was truly inspirational, they raised a substantial amount of money that will help us to continue our mission of transforming young lives through sport."
Preeti Jassal, Marketing & Fundraising Manager, SSF
"Tenner to Tons provided me with the opportunity to develop my skills. For example, entrepreneurship, using and understanding a balance sheet, and understanding the importance of leadership in action. Looking ahead, taking part in Tenner to Tons has given me valuable skills I can use going forward in sports development. Furthermore, it was motivating to be raising money to help support young people access sporting opportunities."
Liam McCarthy, Student, UWS
"The Tenner to Tons challenge gave students the opportunity to apply what they were learning on the module into practice, providing students with the experience of running their own enterprise. Skills such as marketing and promotion and managing finances are key skills which future employers look for in our graduates. In addition to these benefits, students were raising money for SSF, who support young people’s access to physical activity within Scotland."
Dr Andrew Bailey, Lecturer, UWS
