Our newly formed East Central Team hosted a Virtual Learning Event to rally young leaders for the new SSF Young Leaders programme in Fife.
The young leaders volunteer in the community and are responsible for supporting a number of the charity’s local programmes, including weekly free Shell Twilight multisport sessions, the newest of which is set to launch in Lochgelly soon, once it is safe to do so. As well as giving the young people the opportunity to participate in multisport activity, the sessions provide youth work inputs on a variety of health and wellbeing topics.
The three-hour training session included external speakers Alice Fox and Paige Boyle, who highlighted the importance and benefits of volunteering for personal development as well as the wider community. The young people also had the opportunity to take part in various themed workshops.
Jason Thomson, SSF Regional Manager (East Central region) said:
“One of the main reasons behind hosting this event was really to find out how the young people are coping in isolation and checking in on their general wellbeing.
“Undoubtedly all of them were really missing being at school and being active. Sitting at a computer all day with very little interaction has been tough on them all. We obviously could not replicate face-to-face interaction but having normal conversations is hugely important and something they have all been lacking. They are all really excited about getting back to volunteering as soon as safely possible.”
More than 40 young leaders took part in the SSF training programmes which were also held in Stirling, North Ayrshire, and Glasgow.
SSF’s Young Leaders and Shell Twilight programmes are supported by the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities scheme, which takes money seized from criminals under the proceeds of crime legislation and invests them in our future – our young people. Shell are also title sponsors for the Shell Twilight programme.
